In chapter 10, we saw that a Mighty Angel descended from heaven and planted his feet on the land and sea. We discussed how many people see this angel as simply a very strong angel, while others recognize that the word “angel” means “messenger” and not necessarily the angelic beings that come to mind when we read that word. Those who unpack this verse to mean “messenger” conclude that this is none other than Christ, Himself. I tend to lean in this direction simply because the way He is described sounds very much like they way Jesus is described in other visions recorded in Scripture.
We also discussed how this vision of John’s in chapter 10 is very similar to Daniel’s vision in Daniel 12. We talked about how Daniel received part 1 of this vision and John receives part 2. In Daniel, we learn that the vision concerns “a time, times, and half a time” (12:7), which we know is that final 3.5 year period of The Great Tribulation. And then in Revelation, John hears, “there will be no more delay!” (10:6) — While Daniel was told to seal up this prophecy, John was told to eat the scroll (digest the contents) and to prophesy. The time for explanation to that final 3.5 year period begins to unfold, and John is charged with the responsibility to deliver this prophecy.
In chapters 11-13, we will learn more of that final 3.5 year period, and the events surrounding it. We know this because you will see phrases like, “42 months,” “a time, times, and half a time,” and “1260 days.” When you do the math, you realize that these phrases are just different ways to say “3.5 years.” In 4 out of the 5 times these phrases are used, it is clear that it is referring to that final 3.5 year period. In chapter 11, however, many debate on whether the Two Witnesses will minister during the first 3.5 years or the second half. I don’t know that we should get hung up on that detail, but for what it’s worth, I’m leaning toward the first half of the 7 Year Tribulation.
This week, we look at the first four verses in Revelation 11. We will look back in Israel’s history to understand what “measuring the temple” is all about, and we will also take some time to think about who these witnesses might be. Of course, this will be nothing more than a fun mental exercise because the Scripture does not tell us their names. Understand that this is pure speculation, but in doing so, we will look back through several Scriptures to see if we can connect any dots.
Let’s get to it …
Praying for you all,
